Bringing Epilepsy Awareness on Purple Day

Today, March 26th, is Epilepsy Awareness Day and Purple Day, a day dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide. About 1.2% of the U.S. population suffers from epilepsy, which is over 3.4 million people. Epilepsy is a chronic disorder that causes unprovoked seizures. It is the fourth most common neurological disorder that affects people of all ages. A person is diagnosed with epilepsy if they have two unprovoked seizures that were not caused by some known and reversible medical condition. Epilepsy can be caused by different conditions that affect a person’s brain, some causes include strokes, brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, or central nervous system infection. This cause is incredibly close to Managed Business Solutions because it affects one of our very own team members, Ashley.

Ashley’s Story

Ashley was initially diagnosed with epilepsy when she was only twelve years old. The diagnosis was a shock to her system, forcing her to be unable to play all of the sports she loved and barring her from enjoying roller coasters to having to enter a new routine of taking medications twice a day and always having Tylenol on hand. Like many individuals with epilepsy, she endured countless physical injuries due to the sudden onset of a seizure, including a fractured skull, a cracked jaw, black eyes, a bruised/lacerated forehead, a dislocated shoulder, and a dislocated collar bone. “I acknowledge that this is something that will always be a part of me, it will never go away, I am just thankful that after much time of uncertainty my epilepsy is well managed,” says Ashley.

Ashley is a true Epilepsy Warrior, persevering throughout the years and overcoming all of the fear associated with suffering from an invisible illness. She says, “without having the support of my family, friends, and even co-workers whom have taken on roles of responsibility without hesitation or even being asked has been pivotal in my ability to continually power through.”
